Under supervision of the Unit Nurse Managers, Resource Nurses, and primary care nurses, the Safety Sitter provides continuous observation and surveillance of assigned patients. Verbally redirects the patient from engaging in at risk behaviors. Summons nursing staff if the patient requires assistance. Knowledgeable and supportive of patient and institutional confidentiality and related hospital policies.

As a Patient Observation/Safety Sitter, you’ll maintain and perform a variety of non-clinical/technical patient care and clerical activities. You will assist with patient care. Patient Observation / Safety Sitter Functions. Provides age-specific care for patients served. Assists with unit/department functions.

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR POSITION TITLE:    Manager, Nursing and/or Patient Care Supervisor

SUMMARY:    Functioning under moderate supervision, the Registered Nurse is, at minimum, a competent practitioner.  This level clinician utilizes the nursing process in providing patient care and patient/family teaching.  The practitioner organizes and implements safe, therapeutic, and efficient patient care in controlled settings with predictable outcomes.  Patients served may include neonate through adult-geriatric. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:    This job has supervisory responsibility.

Qualifications

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS:

  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Maryland and BLS certification.
  • ACLS required (PACU, ICCU, ED),
  • NRP or eligible for completion of course within six (6) months from date in position. 
  • Certification in specialty is preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Will work in a clean, well-lighted environment.  
  • The job requires pushing and pulling and lifting of equipment weighing in excess of 35 pounds up to 40% of the time. 
  • Requires lifting and positioning of patients, weighing up to 300 pounds, with the assistance of other staff members, up to 60% of the time. 
  • The position requires walking and standing 60% of the time, and requires caring supplies and other items.
